About Women’s History Month

The origin of Women’s History Month began as a national celebration in 1981 through the passage of Pub. L. 97-28 which requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week”.  In 1987 the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to designate the entire month of March as “Women’s History Month”.  Since 1995 Presidents have issued annual proclamations designating March as “Women’s History Month”.  Follow this link: PROCLAMATION 6872–WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH, 1996 by President Clinton in Your MVC Library Ebscohost Database (you will need your login and password to follow this permalink) or at the U.S. Government Printing Office (no password required).
